Acoma Pueblo is built on a 357 ft sandstone mesa and has probably been inhabited since the mid-12th century. Long known as "Sky City", the Pueblo's unique location was most likely chosen for defensive purposes. Historians view this pueblo, along with Taos Pueblo, as one of the two oldest continually inhabited settlements in the United States. Although this site was at one time populated by several thousand Indians, the current residents number less than 300.

Acoma Pueblo is located in New Mexico, about 12 miles east of Grants and 50 miles west of Albuquerque; it can be most easily reached by exiting I-40 at exit 96 when heading east from Grants, or at exit 102 when heading west from Albuquerque.
